What Is Poor Alarm Performance Costing Your Operation?

Adjust the numbers below to reflect your facility. This calculator estimates the portion of operational downtime that may reasonably be influenced by alarm performance and the potential savings improved alarm management could create.

Your Operation

Rough numbers are fine. Experiment with different scenarios.

Estimate the financial impact of one hour of lost or reduced production at your facility.
Estimate the number of annual trips, upsets, or abnormal situations where alarm performance may have influenced recognition, operator response, or recovery. The alarm system does not need to be the sole cause.
Estimate the average time from the beginning of the event until stable, recovered operation.
Estimate the portion of incident-related downtime that could reasonably be attributed to alarm performance, including alarm floods, nuisance alarms, poor prioritization, delayed recognition, or slower operator response.
Estimate the percentage of alarm-attributable downtime that could potentially be reduced through better alarm prioritization, nuisance alarm reduction, improved operator awareness, faster response, and more effective recovery. This is not intended to represent a direct relationship between the percentage of alarms reduced and the percentage of downtime reduced.

Estimated Impact

Based on the assumptions to the left

$1,170,000
Potential annual savings
Total incident downtime cost $7,800,000
Estimated alarm-attributable downtime cost $2,340,000
Estimated alarm-attributable hours 9.0
Potential downtime hours avoided 4.5
Remaining alarm-attributable downtime cost $1,170,000
How the estimate works:

The calculator first estimates the total downtime associated with incidents where alarm performance may have been a contributing factor.

It then applies your estimated alarm contribution so the alarm system receives credit only for the portion of downtime it may reasonably have influenced.

Potential savings are calculated only against that alarm-attributable portion.
