User Scenario

A regional wastewater treatment facility processes 165 million gallons per day (MGD) with a peak capacity of 400MGD. Following the commissioning of a new DCS, operators were continuously flooded with alarms, some familiar and some new. The DCS project team began troubleshooting the alarms trying to capture screenshots from peak activity periods to determine root causes. Due to the complexity of the alarm relationships these efforts had minimal impact on reducing alarms.

The team recognized the need for a software tool that could capture and analyze the alarm data. After developing selection criteria, they evaluated several tools and selected LogMate. One of the advantages was the accessibility. LogMate’s thin-client, standard web browser access provided the entire team with the ability to view and analyze meaningful, real-time alarm information from their desktops.

Using the related alarm analysis they quickly found that over 40% of the alarm activity was being generated by two instruments, a temperature sensor and a hydrocarbon analyzer. Once these issues were corrected, the alarm activations in the control room were much more manageable. The plant incorporated LogMate into their on-going operations strategy requiring regular monitoring of alarms using LogMate’s alarm activity analysis and reports.
